Ethel Regina Schattle was born May 22, 1927 in Cameron, Texas.  She was the seventh of eight children, two girls and six boys, born to Henry Joseph Schattle and Mary Magdalena Krull.  She grew up during the Great Depression, raised on a farm, picking cotton and dreaming of a better life.

At the age of 20, she entered Seton Hospital School of Nursing in Austin.  Taught by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949.  On a blind date she met a man in the Navy, Thomas Arden Fillmore and they were married in the Rectory of St. Monica Catholic Church in September, 1952.  Being career military, Navy then Coast Guard, meant a lifetime of travel and many, many cross country moves.  They raised four children during their 39 years of marriage, Matthew, Mark, Mary and Maurice.

Tom Fillmore died in 1991 and Mark died in 2014.

Ethel is survived by her remaining three children, Matthew, Mary and Maurice; five grandchildren;  three great-grandchildren , Olivia, Harper and Vera, and Baby Boy Fillmore on the way.

This small town, hard-headed, hard-working, German girl endured much throughout her life.  Her Catholic faith and her devotion to our Blessed Mother remained steadfast.  Her legacy lives on.
