Obituary of Rutha Lou Evans Westfall

Rutha Lou Evans Westfall passed away on December 11,2024 at a memory care facility in Fort Worth, Texas.  She valiantly batted dementia for 8 years.

Lou was born in Comanche County, Texas on July 2, 1928 to Rutha Ray and Hardy Evans. Lou and her sister, Gwen Evans Greenlee, grew up in Comanche and graduated from Comanche High School. She attended business school in Abilene and returned to Comanche to work at Comanche National Bank. She met and married Leon Westfall after he returned from serving in the Army Air Corp during WWII. They had two daughters, Joyce and Peggy. Shortly after Peggy was born, the family moved from Comanche to Fort Worth, Texas. She started working at South Fort Worth State Bank in 1952 and retired, at what now, is Wells Fargo in 1990.

Lou was a “people person” and always enjoyed meeting new people. Joyce and Peggy’s friends were always welcome.

 She enjoyed traveling and was always ready to go anywhere. She enjoyed many trips with her daughters and son-in-law; including trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Norway and many of the National Parks. Lou loved family gathering at Lake Proctor where the whole family enjoyed swimming, boating, skiing and “seadooing.” She was an avid collector of antique sterling silver souvenir spoons. She had a large collection and she attended national spoon conventions all over the country where she received many awards for her spoon displays. Lou spent many vacations traveling with Leon, her sister Gwen and brother-in law Don Greenlee researching the family genealogy. She was an proud and active member of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR).

Lou and Leon were long time residents of Edgecliff Village where she was a longtime member of the Edgecliff Village Garden Club.

Lou is preceded in death by her husband, Leon, and sister, Gwen Greenlee. She is survived by her loving daughters, Joyce Spooner and Peggy Newton and husband, Tommy Newton; and her adored grandchildren, Scott Newton and Teri Jeffrress and husband Chris Jeffress; and great grandchildren, Abby and Joseph Jeffress.

A private service was held for Lou at Sardis Cemetery in Comanche, Texas.
