Pauline Walton West

May 29, 2018

Pauline Walton West passed on peacefully May 29, 2018, at her home in Fort Worth.

Pauline was the youngest of four children born to Livvie Ashworth and John Mac Walton in Fort Worth. She and her siblings were raised on 6th Avenue in the current hospital district where she attended Paschal High School. She began her college career North Texas State Teacher’s College in Denton where she studied dietetics.  After graduation she studied at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, where she received her Master’s degree.  She was proudly a Registered Dietician for the rest of her life.

She met the love of her life and future husband, James Moore West, while attending Paschal High School as seating was then always in alphabetical order. They were married in Fort Worth on June 5, 1945. Pauline had traveled from Stanford by riding the troop trains to marry Jim before he deployed to Korea. She returned to finish her degree while he completed his service. After the war, they lived in Austin while Jim finished his engineering degree at the University of Texas. After he was hired by Chevron Oil, they began his career that included 19 moves in his 36 years with the company.

Despite the many relocations, Pauline continued her career as a Registered Dietician while raising their two children, Tom and Josie. She was always the consummate hostess and planner for their family and friends. Jim and Pauline were known as excellent bridge players and dancers. They enjoyed their retired lives together visiting children and grandchildren, traveling worldwide from China to Russia (the long way) and from the Arctic Circle to New Zealand. Pauline was known for her daring culinary curiosity and was often appointed “Chief Taster” on group tours in exotic locations. Pauline was renowned for her Southern hospitality, great cooking, and her grace and charm with strangers and friends alike.  She never met a stranger and made new friends and old friends feel like family. She was loved and adored by her children and grandchildren as well as by her favorite daughter-in-law and son-in-law.

Pauline was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, James Moore West, her sister, Maxine Allen, and brothers, Worth and Waltham.

Pauline was a long time member of the American Dietetic Association, Woman’s Club of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, and Colonial Country Club.

The family would like to express their warmest thanks to the West Side Caregivers (especially Regina and Jan for their friendship to Pauline), and VITAS for their kindness, compassion and professionalism.

Survivors: Children, Thomas Walton West (Dory), Josephine West Dumbauld (Dennis); grandchildren, James Dumbauld (Christina), Carrie Hooton(Adam), Elizabeth Shanahan (Drew); and great grandchildren, Alexa, Gracie, Cora, Sophia, and Brock.
