Obituary of Lucy Merrill Savage Hassler

Lucy Merrill Savage Hassler, 86, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021. Lucy was born in Peoria, IL on August 9th 1935, the only surviving child of Kenneth Nelson and Lucy Zellen Savage. Artistic from a young age, she enjoyed drawing and painting. She served as art editor of the yearbook at her high school in Evanston IL where she graduated in 1953. She attended the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated with a BS in Physics. There she met her husband John M Hassler Jr, and they were married December 14, 1957.After graduation she worked as a physicist/engineer in Alabama before the couple relocated to Fort Worth, Texas in 1959. John then began his career at then Convair which is now Lockheed Martin. Lucy joined the Junior Women’s League and worked as an interior designer for many years. Both John and Lucy trained German Shepherd Dogs in Obedience, and competed at AKC trials.She had two children, Stephanie and Kenneth, to whom she provided an exciting childhood complete with horses and motorcycles and summer trips to the beach at South Padre Island. She also used her artistic talents to create beautiful watercolor paintings, intricate doll houses, and fantastic Halloween costumes.Lucy returned to her career as an engineer in the early 1980’s, working as a Mass Properties engineer for Lockheed Martin both in Fort Worth and with her husband on the Joint Strike Fighter program in Nagoya Japan. Lucy and John enjoyed traveling throughout Japan and spent an extended vacation in Australia before returning to Texas.She was a proud member of the Fort Worth chapter of the Red Hat Ladies Society, and participated in a local Brewmasters club where her mead won several honors. She also taught herself how to create digital art, and enjoyed designing the graphics for several clubs’ flyers and t-shirts.She is survived by her two children, Stephanie Jeffers, and Kenneth Hassler (Donna); and five grandchildren, Silas and Ian Jeffers; Joseph, Emily Merrill, and Molly Hassler.
