Obituary of Ray Bowman Duncan
Ray Bowman Duncan was the only child of Ray Sigler Duncan and Lilyan Bowman Duncan. He attended Westminster College and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He graduated in 1957 and attended St Louis University College of Medicine. In June 1962, upon receiving his MD, he met and married his wife Marlene.After medical school, he and Marlene moved to Memphis, TN for his internship at John Gaston Hospital. In 1963 they moved to Saint Louis for his residency in anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Public Health Service at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD from 1965 to 1967.In 1967, he and Marlene moved to Fort Worth where he practiced anesthesiology at St. Joseph Hospital for the next 11 years. In 1978 he became head of anesthesia at Medical Plaza Hospital. At Medical Plaza, he was instrumental in implementing the use of pulse oxygen analyzers to monitor all surgery and recovery patients. In 1993 he became Director of Plaza Day Surgery, a position he held until he retired in 1998.Dr. Duncan was a Diplomat of American Board of Anesthesiology, a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, American Society of Anesthesiology, Texas Society of Anesthesiology, Texas Medical Association, and Tarrant County Medical Association.He was a member of University Christian Church, where he performed in the Boar’s Head Christmas Pageant for 19 years.Dr. Duncan enjoyed sailing, boating, bicycling, and rode several century bike rides at Fort Worth, Waco, and Wichita Falls. He loved animals and had several dogs as companions over the years.He is survived by his wife Marlene; his son, Andrew, and grandchildren, Audrey and Max Duncan; his daughter, Beth; and his son, Chris, and Chris’ fiancée, Mellie Mathis.
