Obituary of Philip Lee Leatherwood
Philip Lee Leatherwood, Jr., a longtime teacher, author and educator in economics and literature in schools in the US, Europe and Asia, died on Monday, May 21, 2018.Philip was born on March 1, 1956 in Tucson, AZ, to Philip Sr. and Mary Devereaux Leatherwood. Philip attended St. Paul Catholic School, Castleberry High School, earned a B.A. and B.S. from TCU, an M.S. in Economics from University of New Mexico and a Master of Arts in Liberal Education from St. John’s College, Santa Fe.A musician from an early age, he was part of a Grammy Award winning recording while with the Texas Boys Choir, played jazz trombone, sang with the Schola Cantorum in Ft. Worth and studied opera at the UT Austin Graduate School of Music.Philip was a lifelong sailor, enjoying small boats in his youth and then sailing the South China Sea and the Pacific while a student at the Merchant Marine Academy. He later sailed his own boat across the North Atlantic and continued to sail the Norwegian fjords during summers for many years.Philip was a true global citizen and his insatiable wanderlust took him all over the world. For the last 25 years he has lived in Norway, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan, and all over China. It was during these years that he met and married Alma Kudabaeva. Their thirteen year old daughter, Aisha, was the light of his life.In addition to Aisha and Alma, Philip is survived by his mother, Mary Leatherwood, sister and brothers, Elizabeth Nelson (and John), Peter Leatherwood (and Kelly), John Leatherwood (and Theresa), and their children, Mary Frances and William Nelson, Anna, Sarah, and Maggie Leatherwood, and Robert “Davis” and Philip “Linus” Leatherwood.
