Obituary of Michael Smerick

Michael “Mike” Smerick, 96, died Monday, January 21, 2019 at his residence in Fort Worth after a brief illness.Born August 4, 1922 in Frackville, Pennsylvania, Michael is survived by his children, Susan and Mike Jackowski of Fort Worth, Michael Smerick Jr. and Michael Fox of Spokane, Philip Smerick and Les Rodriguez of Fort Worth, Lisa Goodman of Fort Worth; and grandchildren, Jennifer Jackowski and James Selle of Orlando.Leaving home at an early age, Mike joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was stationed in Roswell, New Mexico. Once World War II was declared, Mike joined the Air Force and trained to be a bombardier. He was stationed in Italy and completed many combat runs. At war’s end, Mike entered Texas Christian University. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business. He soon met his wife Mary. They were married in 1950. Mike enjoyed a career in Sales/Marketing for All Church Press and other publications. He then discovered substitute teaching, working for the FWISD for over 20 years. He retired at the age of 90.His hobbies included beer, napping, opera, burning BBQ, and crossword puzzles. He loved golf and coached his daughter. He also volunteered for Casa Manana Theatre and devoted over 60 years for the Knights of Columbus.
