Obituary of Charles Nathan Curry

Charles Nathan Curry passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born October 5, 1941, in Waxahachie, Texas, to Mabel and Otwell Travern (“Cooper”) Curry, Charles was the youngest of four children. He attended Waxahachie High School and graduated in 1959. Charles graduated from the University of Texas in 1963 and then the University of Texas Law School in 1966. He was a proud Waxahachie Indian and a proud Longhorn, through and through. Charles began his career at Shannon, Gracey, Ratliff, & Miller in Fort Worth, where he became a partner and practiced for 50 years. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas and served as both chair and vice-chair of the real estate, probate and trust section’s financial institutions committee. He also served on the legal forms committee and the business law section of the State Bar of Texas, and he was a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. Charles was also a founding member of the Texas Association of Bank Counsel and served two terms as Director. He was a member of the Texas College of Real Estate Attorneys and the U.S. Court of Appeals – Fifth Circuit and the U.S. District Court – Northern District of Texas. Other honors he received include the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Rating: AV Preeminent, induction into the Ex-Students’ Association Who’s Who (Waxahachie High School Class of 1959), and Top Attorney for many years by Fort Worth Texas magazine. As Charles approached retirement, he was Of Counsel for Bonds Ellis Eppich Schafer Jones law firm. There was never a person who loved his career more or who was prouder of being an attorney than Charles. He was forever grateful for the friends and many connections his career brought him. Charles married the love of his life, Mary, in 1973 in Fort Worth, where they established deep roots. They spent 48 years raising their children together, entertaining friends, traveling, loving on their grandchildren, and almost never missing an important event of their children or grandchildren. Charles had a love for the French language and attended courses at Texas Christian University to continue learning. He loved tennis with his daughters and with his buddies. He loved big and no one doubted the love he had for them. He was loyal and enjoyed his weekly Friday lunches with some of his very best friends. He will be remembered for his quiet confidence, dry sense of humor, and most of all pride for his family. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Richard Earl, sister Jean Evelyn, and nephew Charles Frederick. Survivors: wife, Mary of Fort Worth; daughters, Claire Curry McInnis and husband, Jeff, of Fort Worth and Anne Curry Phillippe and husband, John, of Austin; sister, Annette Cooper and husband, Jimmy, of Waxahachie; grandchildren, John and Maris McInnis, Claire, Jane, and Elizabeth Phillippe; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a host of the most amazing friends.
