Obituary of Tommie Marjorie Wade Smith

Tommie Wade Smith, 101, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother died peacefully Tuesday, January 7, 2020.Tommie, born November 22, 1918 in Alvarado, she was the daughter of the late Estelle McGeeHee and Oscar Curtis Wade. She graduated from High School where she began playing women’s softball. She continued after high school pitching for Prudential Insurance and Coca Cola. Known as “the Hurler”, southpaw Tommie pitched a number of “no hitters”. She loved to talk about her softball days and frequently shared her memories of those wonderful days, even sharing her pitching grip that kept striking out every batter. Eventually Tommie moved to Fort Worth. She worked for several businesses including Montgomery Ward, Fort Worth Wholesale and Evans Sales, primarily as a bookkeeper. She was a long time member of the former Riverside Baptist Church and taught third grade Sunday School there for over 60 years.Tommie married James E. Smith in 1941 and spent 55 happy and blessed years together before he passed away in 1997. Tommie was blessed with two daughters, Melodye S. Taylor and Marjorie S. Elliott. She was so proud of their educational achievements and their successes in life. Melodye and husband Scott have two daughters, Lauren and Meredith; and Marjorie and husband Tommy also have two daughters, Katie and Kayla. Katie and husband Jon have a son, James and Kayla and husband Zac have two daughters, Ellie and Georgia Kate. Tommie was known as Mimi to her much loved great granddaughters and great grandson, and Great Mimi to Meredith’s daughter Luna Rose.Tommie’s love for her family and friends was boundless, she was generous with all who knew her, and her witty personality kept everyone laughing. A visit with Tommie came with cups of coffee and plenty of homemade desserts.In addition to her husband and parents, Tommie was preceded in death by her brothers Homer, L.D. Wayne, Billie Joe and Earl Gene, and her sister Janie. She is survived also by numerous nephews and nieces, friend Evelyn Allison and dear friend and caregiver Betty Reeves. Our deepest gratitude goes to all the caregivers at the Courtyards at River Park who have supported Tommie, loved her and given her family peace of mind.
