Obituary of Lauren Sue Askew

Lauren Sue Askew, 75, passed away while surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Memorial Service: Lauren’s celebration of life will be held at St Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer St, Houston, TX on Friday, January 12th at 10am.

Lauren was born on May 29, 1948, in Houston to Dorothea and Alfred “Chet” Askew. After graduating from Lamar High School, she went on to receive both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in education from the University of Houston.

Following in the footsteps of her family, Lauren entered the world of education after graduation. She served as an English Teacher, Counselor, and Administrator in the Houston Independent School District (“HISD”) for 36 years. She had a passion for counseling others and a strong affinity for her fellow educators and students. After her tenure at HISD, she became an Instructor for the University of Houston Downtown where she helped train new teachers to serve in HISD.

Lauren had many passions including traveling, poetry, hosting friends, and spending time in the Texas Hill Country; however chief among these, was her love of family. You could often find Lauren hosting family gatherings at her home, holding poetry parties, and orchestrating holiday schedules. Most of all, Lauren’s pride and joy were her daughter and her grandsons. She never passed on an opportunity to spend time with them.

Lauren loved Jesus and her church family at St. Luke’s, which shined through her attendance and participation in Sunday school and bible studies. As a second cousin to President Lyndon B. Johnson, her cremated remains will be buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery in Stonewall, TX with her grandparents and parents who preceded her death.

Lauren is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Jeff Jones; her daughter, Ava Dallas, and her husband, Clayton; her grandchildren, James and Patrick Dallas; her sister, Ava Askew; her brother, Robert Askew, and his wife Margaret; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
