Alan was born August 8, 1945 to Gordon H and Edrine Potts in Weslaco, Texas, the youngest of three boys.  He lived in Weslaco until his high school graduation in 1963 at which time he moved to Fort Worth to attend Texas Christian University and study music.  It was at TCU that he met his beloved wife, Vivian.  They were married on July 29, 1967 at St. John’s Episcopal Church where Alan was also the organist and choir director.  He remained at St. John’s until 1971 when he became the choir director at Overton Park United Methodist Church.  He devoted more than 30 years to that church.

In 2005 it was time for a change and the opportunity to return to the helm as organist and choir director at St. John’s Episcopal church arose.  He remained at St. John’s until April of this year.  Concurrent to his choirmaster career, Alan was also a dedicated educator.  He taught choir to children in many schools in the Fort Worth ISD including Southwest High School, Wedgewood Middle, McLean Middle, and Pascal High.  He also spent over 15 years teaching choir at Fort Worth Country Day.  He dedicated much of his later years tending to his wife and traveling the world with her.

Alan is survived by his son Richard Potts and wife Monica, daughter Courtney Bone and husband James, and daughter Crisanne Barker and husband Jeffrey.  Grandchildren are Lauren and Brandon Potts, Katie and Riley Bone, Claire, Blaine, and Chloe Barker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Potts, his parents Gordon H and Edrine Potts, and his brothers Hal and Robert Joe Potts.
