Obituary of Thomas William Wilson, M.D.

Thomas William Wilson, M.D., a retired pediatrician, passed away on July 17, 2024 in Fort Worth, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born in San Antonio, Tx on October 5, 1936 to Glen Parten and Hugh Ella Denson Wilson.  He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1954, and in 1957 was granted his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He then attained his medical degree from The University of Chicago Medical School in 1961.  Tom further studied pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Nashville, Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, and finished his residency at Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston.

To fulfill his two year obligation to the Berry Plan, Tom entered the U.S. Army Medical Corp in 1964, and taught pediatrics at William Beaumont Army Hospital, El Paso.  While stationed there he developed the military’s first program for handicapped children.  In 1966 Tom came to Fort Worth as the first Medical Director of the Child Study Center, entered private practice in 1969, and retired from active practice in 2002.  Everyday thereafter was a vacation day for him.

For many years Tom was involved with the local and national boards of The Family Service of America, where he served as a director, and then as chairman of the finance committee.  This commitment took him to New York City on many occasions, a place he loved very much.

Tom was also a dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church here in Fort Worth.  Some of his positions included being a Vestry member, an Acolyte master, serving on the Building and Grounds committee, and playing in the Hand Bell choir.  But of all the jobs he held at Trinity he was most proud of being the Chairman of the Needlepoint Committee. He was passionate about needlepointing for over 60 years.

When he married his wife Jean, in 1974, she asked if he had a passport.  When he replied “no”, she said: “fix that”.  Then the real adventures began.  He was a consummate traveler and travel planner, always having the next trip in mind.

“Dr. Tom” was preceded in death by his parents, and his half-brother Glen Parten Wilson, Jr.  He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Barbara “Jean”, and his children Thomas William, II- Tad and wife Michelle, Glen “Taylor” and wife Kelly, Matthew and wife Christi, and twins Catherine and Stuart. He is also survived by his grandchildren McKenzie Wilson and fiancé Danny O’Leary, Shannon Wilson, Lily Wicker, Max Wilson and wife Nancy, and Elena Cantu; and his great granddaughters Maggie Wilson and Emmy Kuhnell.
