James Edward Stavens was born January 31, 1943, to Ernest and Josephine Stavens in Hatton, North Dakota.  He was baptized at Goose River Lutheran Church, rural Hatton, North Dakota. James served in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Worth Texas where he met the love of his life, Ellen Diane Walton. He retired as Detective J.E. Stavens from the Fort Worth Police Department in 1993, after 28 years of service.

James (Jim) and Diane were united in marriage on November 2, 1963, and spent 57 wonderful years together. To Jim, Diane was his everything. They loved spending mornings at the breakfast table, playing games with their grandchildren, sharing a love for fishing, and making memories with family and friends. After Diane's passing in 2021, Jim enjoyed attending church and his grandchildren’s school and sporting events. He also devoted much of his time volunteering at Manna Storehouse in Weatherford. Jim’s passion for creativity was evident in the countless hours he spent in his “shop,” where he carved tree limbs and logs into unique pieces, such as canes, miniature cowboys, crosses, and more.

Jim was an active and dedicated member of the Aledo United Methodist Church for many years, where he formed lasting bonds with fellow parishioners. Known for his gift of conversation, he connected easily with people of all ages. His Norwegian determination and immense patience were key qualities as he participated in numerous youth mission trips, where he guided young people in service and faith. Jim’s love for cooking was well known, especially when it came to preparing large meals for his family and friends. He became famous for his smoked ribs and his skillet breakfasts.  He took great passion in hosting his men’s group from church along with friends and family with breakfast in the woods by the creek.

As a father, "Pops”, set a high standard for integrity, trust in God, and the importance of honesty. He lived his life striving to do what was right, rather than what was popular, and he instilled these values in his children. He taught them the importance of hard work, discipline, and standing up for what you believe in, and he always made sure they understood the value of a dollar. Known to walk away from a car deal over $50, he showed his children that principles matter more than convenience. Pops gave his children unconditional love, teaching them how to carry that love forward into their own families.

As a grandfather, "Papa," had a simple motto: "Have fun, but don't get hurt." He was always the first to encourage his grandchildren to try new things and figure things out for themselves, all while providing a steady hand of patience, understanding, and support. He never let a moment go by without reminding them of his love. Whether they were hunting at the deer lease or simply cuddling on his lap, Papa made sure to spend intentional time with each grandchild, always becoming their biggest fan and showing them what true love and presence meant.

Jim is survived by his son, Philip (Michelle) Stavens of Burleson, TX; seven grandchildren, Emily (Garrett) Winder, Audrey (Jason) Hatcher, Jake Evans, Parker (Lauren) Stavens, Pierce (Hannah) Stavens, Mia (Luke) Pescarino and Stellamae Stavens; nine great-grandchildren, Connor Colletti, Carter Colletti, Pruitt Winder, Luke Hatcher, Madelyn Colletti, Stone Winder, Beau Hatcher, Paxton Stavens, and Lucy Stavens; additionally, James was excitedly awaiting the arrival of three more great-grandchildren due to arrive in 2025; sister, Nancy (Paul) Linnell; seven nieces and nephews, Scott (Heather) Walton, David Walton, JoDee Linnell, Matthew Linnell, Paula Linnell, Melany (Matt) Jones and Kary Qualls; Aunt Elsie Hovland; and numerous cousins.
