Obituary of Joan Griffin Gambill

Joan Griffin Gambill died January 24, 2025 in Fort Worth, Texas, five days shy of her 97th birthday.

Joan Gambill was born on January 29, 1928, in Fort Worth. She was in the first class at North Hi Mount at its opening in 1936, and even attended the school’s 80th anniversary in 2016. Joan graduated from Arlington Heights High School, attended Gulf Park College for Women for two years, then graduated from the University of Texas in Austin. Years later Joan earned a teacher’s certificate with a specialty in language disorders from Texas Wesleyan University. One of her greatest joys was using that education to teach struggling kids to read. Joan also volunteered at the Easter Seals Society, the Modern Art Museum, All Saints Episcopal Church, the Van Cliburn Competition, as well as for the Cub Scouts and Blue Birds. She was a member of several clubs, including The Assembly, the Roundelay Club, Junior League, and a long-time member of River Crest Country Club. Joan was a lifelong learner and enjoyed being a member of the Woman’s Wednesday Club, Lecture Foundation, and the Durant Study Group.

Joan Gambill was preceded in death by her parents, Charles C. and Lois Eldredge Griffin, her brother Charles Eldredge Griffin and his wife Jeanne, her devoted husband of 60 years of marriage, Lawton Graves Gambill, and two of her grandchildren, Justin Woollis and Jessica Ivy. Joan is survived by her four children: Anne Ivy, widow of Don Ivy, Jeanne Woollis and husband John, Louis Gambill and wife Mary, Elaine Lambert and husband Hal, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
