Obituary of Mary Bernice McDowell Logan

Mary Bernice Logan passed away peacefully on January 6, 2021 surrounded by loved ones. Mary was born on October 17, 1927 in Dallas, Texas to Leslie and Lucy McDowell. She was preceeded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. James I. Logan Jr.Mary was raised in Oak Cliff where she graduated from Sunset High School. She went on to attend TCU and remained an avid TCU football fan for her entire life. She was a devoted member of Rosemont Christian Church where she became a TIMOTHY, dedicating her life to Christian service. Little did she know that she would meet and marry Jim Logan, an aspiring young Presbyterian minister in 1946. The young couple moved to Austin in 1949 where Jim studied for the ministry at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, graduating in 1952. While in Seminary they made many lifelong friendships with other young ministers and their families. Mary’s greatest joy was being the wife of a minister. She was a most gracious hostess and frequently entertained parishioners in their home whether it be for a cup of coffee or an annual church wide Christmas party. She loved people and one of her greatest gifts was hospitality. Together they served churches in Whitewright, Chickasha, Oklahoma, Denison, Fort Worth, Irving and Tulsa, Oklahoma. She maintained friendships from every congregation until her dying day.Mary worked in personnel for the Irving Independent Schools and Helmrich & Payne Oil Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was a member of Presbyterian Women in each church they served, the Colleyville Women’s Club and an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth. She was known for her stunning silver hair, her colorful eyewear, her classic taste in clothes and fun accessories. She loved a good joke and loved to play games, most especially “42”. Mary was a wonderful cook. She loved to cook for family and friends. She often took baked custard to loved ones who were ill or needed comfort.Mary lived at Trinity Terrace for fourteen years. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Trinity Terrace for taking care of our mother, especially the Assisted Living staff and the Skilled Nursing staff where she resided for the last few weeks of her life. We would also like to thank Overture Home Health and Total Hospice for caring for her at the end of her life.She is survived by her children Lu’Ann Hart (Gary), Jean Horan (Roy), Jim Logan; grandchildren Branden Hart (Sarah), Hilary Lex (Harry); and one great grandson, the light of her life, James Hart. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she dearly loved.
